Organizational Profile:
Partners In Health (PIH) is an internationally recognized non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, advocacy and research, PIH works to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need. Headquartered in Boston, PIH has sites in Haiti and the Dominican Republic as well as Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Kazakhstan, Boston and the Navajo Nation, where we work to lessen the joint burden of disease and poverty.
Founded in 1985, at a small community clinic in Cange, PIH and Zanmi Lasante (ZL, our Haiti-based sister organization) pioneered a community-based model of care, hiring and training thousands of accompagnateurs to prevent illness, monitor needs and deliver quality health care to people living with chronic diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis. In partnership with the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), PIH/ZL has expanded to a total of 12 sites in the Central Plateau and the Lower Artibonite, serving a catchment area of 1.3 million people
Project Profile:
This past year, PIH/ZL and the MSPP opened Hôpital Universitaire Mirebalais (HUM). Located in the town of Mirebalais, 30 miles north of Port-au-Prince, the 300-bed national teaching hospital represents the biggest reconstruction project in the health sector launched in Haiti since the January 2010 earthquake. A national referral facility and teaching center, HUM was designed and built in response to a direct request from the Haitian government in accordance with the national plan to decentralize access to care and medical education. HUM offers a new standard of care and provides high-quality education for the next generation of Haitian medical students, resident physicians, nurses and other clinical staff.


Fonctions

Overall Responsibilities
The Internist will work jointly with the Oncology program and Transfusion Medicine Service. For the Oncology program, the Internist will perform Oncology patient consultations, oversee chemotherapy administration and manage side and adverse effects of Chemotherapy. This individual will take the lead on basic Oncology training for UHM and ZL wide clinical and education outreach staff.
The Internist will lead patient transfusion safety in the hospital (UHM) and dually serve as Blood Bank Director. This position requires close working relationships with the Ministry of Health and Population Services and the Red Cross. Additionally, the Internist will support the Internal Medicine Department at the hospital
Clinical Responsibilities:
• Conduct consultations in Outpatient Oncology clinic 3 - 4 days a week
• Oversee administration of chemotherapy and transfusion to Oncology patients.
• Manage side and adverse effects during chemotherapy administration
• Work closely with other services by taking care of patients
Program Management
• In collaboration with DFCI/ZL Training Team and Oncology Program Director, develop training plans for ZL physicians, nurses and community health workers on basic Oncology.
• Attend weekly breast cancer call with Boston based Dana Farber Cancer Institute team and present patients for treatment recommendations
• Respond to Oncology consultation requests from other services with the Program Director.
• Assume the responsibilities of the Clinical Director (especially Oncology clinic and DFCI weekly breast cancer calls) during his/her absence.
Transfusion Safety
• Responsible for epidemic control of cancer case in the hospital by working closely with the statistic departement of the hos pital by creating tools and processes for collecting all data.
• Management of the blood bank and transfusion medicine service as Blood Bank Director
o Develop guidelines for transfusion medicine with clinical departments
o Respond to consultations for transfusion medicine
o Be a contact person for hemovigilance
o Participate and oversee transfusion committee meetings
o Ensure the competent and proficient performance of all HUM Blood Bank Technicians; this includes compliance with quality standards, ongoing procurement of supplies, the release and use of blood components in the hospital, and serving as a resource for all other questions and issues.
o Develop and manage the Patient Blood Management program (PBM)
o Supervise the education program in transfusion medicine for medical students, residents, physicians and nurses; participate in teaching activities


Qualifications Requises

• An MD degree. Residency in Internal medicine
• Interest in Oncology and hematology preferred.
• Interest in transfusion medicine
• Strong clinical and case management skills to facilitate optimal clinical care for hematology and oncology patients and families.
• Willingness to attend specialist training in-country or internationally in Oncology or Hematology and transfusion medicine
• Commitment to excellence and professionalism in patient care.
• Strong clinical skills.
• Fluency in French and Haitian Creole. Proficiency in English preferred.
• Demonstrated possession of excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative as well as to work cooperatively with a diverse team.
• Ability to work under pressure, prioritize work flow, adapt to fluctuating workload and meet deadlines.
