Background: Service-Learning is an essential component of HELP’s Citizenship & Leadership (C&L) program, as it is the avenue through which HELP students are able to put leadership theory into practice. This experiential learning structure enables students to learn authentic lessons in designing, implementing, and evaluating projects, and provides authentic experiences through which students are able to apply their knowledge, skills, and attitudes and develop their leadership capacity. HELP students participate in an Environmental Protection initiative, a Literacy-Development initiative, and develop and implement their own community-based initiative, which may involve a local partner such as: YMCA, YWCA, Fondation Toya, SAKALA. While not a requirement, students may also choose to extend their initiative through the summer period through our Summer Service-Learning program. Students participate in service-learning activities over the weekends and serve for 1.5- to 3 hours per week.
