Introduction

The Haiti Communications Director will be responsible to support at the country level the execution of integrated communications strategies in alignment with Save the Children’s visibility, advocacy, programmatic and fundraising goals, to position Save the Children in Haiti as the leading organization for children’s rights, and to connect and interact with key internal and external audiences including policy makers to gain support for the mission of Save the Children in Haiti. This may include attending meetings/events where he/she can interact with government officials or other individuals who have influence over issues for which Save the Children is seeking greater public awareness.
The Haiti Communications Director will serve as the liaison between Haiti and the region and will support communications and advocacy efforts and the production of humanitarian information products for emergencies and humanitarian responses and for advocacy on children’s rights issues happening within Haiti. The Haiti Communications Director will also coordinate all in-country communications initiatives based on key interventions and in alignment with regional communication strategies and global campaigns through effective communications work plans.
Finally, the Haiti Communications Director will serve as focal point for all communications actions related to Save the Children’s interventions in Haiti and will work in close collaboration with the Regional Communications Team and the Regional Advocacy Team to leverage the Haiti-based project interventions to enhance public awareness on children’s conditions and rights. In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.


Fonctions

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

External and Internal Communications:
• Work with the Regional Communications and Advocacy Teams to support the execution of communications strategies aligned with our regional thematic priorities – children on the move and adolescents – and Haiti projects, ensuring its implementation at the national level to engage internal and external key audiences.
• Lead and supervise national communications plans to support regional communications strategies and all communications efforts in identified interventions areas to achieve the team objectives
• Lead, manage and support field communications and advocacy initiatives.
• Coordinate with other Children Advocacy groups to help achieve common goals.
• Develop and share with the Regional Communications team a calendar of events in Haiti to guide regional communications efforts and outreach and related to key project’s interventions.
• Identify the visibility and communications needs for the Country Office, ensure to cover these with consultants and ensure the quality of the communications materials developed
• Ensure the production of a variety of communications materials showcasing Save the Children’s projects in Haiti and their impact. This includes supervise the development of compelling content for online, social media, in-person, and in-print use (and re-use/re-purposing), including case studies, success stories, fact sheets, op-eds, blog postings, presentations, videos, etc.
• Ensure that all communications content including social media, web content and printed material disseminated in Haiti conforms to Save the Children brand standards and approved messaging.
• Ensure that all talking points used in Haiti are in line with approved Save the Children messaging
• Work, when necessary, with selected national media outlets to pitch news stories about the work of Save the Children in Haiti. Leverage the local media stories, project input, events, and materials from Haiti based communications team as well as from external partners for dissemination, web-posting and social media and other uses to serve and report to targeted audience, and for accountability purposes.
• Support the development of materials and joint communication initiatives aimed at: fundraising, advocacy, campaigning, humanitarian responses and program efforts. Coordination and articulated work with the different areas within the Regional Office.
• Give support and advice Haiti Country office and members communications teams on strategic communications
• Participate in the Senior Management Team (SMT) in the Country Office and participate taking key decisions for advocacy and communications.
• In close collaboration with the Regional Communications team, track issues in Haiti that could impact Save the Children’s interventions, image or brand and advise the Regional Communications team as well as Country on potential steps forward
• Ensuring coherence and quality for the various communication products
• Contribute to the proposal development process and Haiti humanitarian response plan
• Serve as a focal point in the area of communications, representing the Haiti Country Office and function as a liaison with the Save the Children Regional Communication Office.

Increase Visibility of Humanitarian Crises in Haiti and Advocate for Children’s rights
• Work with the Regional Humanitarian Communication Specialist for effective production of high-quality national information/communications products related to humanitarian emergencies
• Work with Regional Communication Office to better push out national content on relevant platforms (e.g., SCI-produced bulletins, Workplace, social networks) to better position the LAC Region in strategic/global spaces.
• Work with Regional Communication Office in the development of key deliverables for humanitarian responses/emergencies as needed
• Coordinate with Regional Communication Office to proactively identify powerful stories/leads for compelling media opportunities about humanitarian contexts in Haiti
• Be willing and available to travel in-country in the event of a humanitarian emergency to directly support Country Office with the production of all key communications deliverables according to the categorization, as needed, with an emphasis in content gathering
• Participate in regular trainings/webinars on key humanitarian communications themes - such as the production of key communications deliverables for categorized emergencies, the use of Content Hub, and other essential elements of the global humanitarian communications toolkit for better humanitarian communications capacity
• Participate in regional humanitarian communications workshops/simulations to acquire a clear understanding of the expectations and requirements of the Regional Communications team according to each category (1-4) and be prepared to respond in the event of a humanitarian emergency in Haiti and the region.

Qualifications réquises

QUALIFICATIONS
• University degree in a relevant subject or equivalent field experience; master’s degree is preferred
• Good writing skills for communication products including but not limited to press releases, media briefings, situation reports, case studies/success stories, learning products, talking points and the crafting of key messages
• Great analytical/communications skills – with ability to be both engaging and nuanced; ability to make a complex story sound simple
• Great capacity to gather content or otherwise working experience in insecure or sensitive environments; demonstrated ability to interview vulnerable people (including children) about sensitive subjects keeping their best interests at heart
• Cross-cultural experience, understanding and sensitivity
• Fluency in both Creole and French is essential; Excellent English Proficiency is required.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
• Significant experience (7+ years) as a communications specialist in an international setting with a track record of excellent coverage
• Field experience (3+ years) in international humanitarian/emergency settings or other relevant context and preferably, preferably in communications and/or programs
• Proven track record of developing and/or overseeing the production of high-quality internal/external communications products; ability to appropriately adjust communication/writing style depending on the target audience
• Experience of communications processes, research, and development of internal/external communications products
• Experience working in a fast-paced environment with a demonstrated ability to balance multiple initiatives and priorities and deliver on tight deadlines
• Experience managing large project portfolios and interacting with national and regional business units to fulfill expected tasks
• Experience with website development and social media
• Full computer literacy in standard office products
• Strong planning/anticipation skills
• Sound judgment and an ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks

Desired
• Knowledge of communications software (Adobe Design Suite) is a plus
• Experience of work in non-profit sector a plus
• Familiarity with key institutional donors a plus
• Ability to travel to difficult/complex emergency settings as required

SCOPE OF ROLE:
Reports to: the Country Director and works in close collaboration with Regional Communications and Regional Advocacy Teams.
Staff reporting to this post: Field communications staff (At least one other key staff could be part of the Save The Children national communication team with key technical background)
Role Dimensions: The Haiti Communications and Media Manager will also work jointly with the regional and country areas such as programs, humanitarian, operations, advocacy and campaigns, fundraising, among others.

The post holder will have access to personal data about children and/or young people as part of their work; or the post holder will be working in a regulated position (accountant, barrister, solicitor, legal executive); therefore, a police check will be required (at ‘standard’ level in the UK or equivalent in other countries).
