Introduction

Build Change (www.buildchange.org) is an award-winning, international non-profit social enterprise that specializes in post-earthquake reconstruction. Build Change has extensive experience working in Banda Aceh and Sumatra, Indonesia and Sichuan, China. In Haiti, Build Change provides hands-on technical assistance and training directly to homeowners and builders during the rebuilding process to enable them to build safe homes that will withstand any future earthquake. In addition, Build Change provides clients such as local and international NGOs, donors and private sector firms with a full range of technical assistance and structural engineering services.


Fonctions

• Provide a full range of technical support to the Build Change construction training teams conducting workshops in local communities.
• Assist local and international engineers and consultants to design earthquake-resistant and culturally appropriate homes for Haiti.
• Assist in a housing subsector study to evaluate locally appropriate home design options; and ensure technologies and solutions are consistent with Build Change’s philosophy of earthquake resistance, sustainability, and cultural appropriateness.
• Provide inputs for the development of design criteria, structural and architectural drawings, bills of quantity, construction checklists, and training materials as necessary, for new and retrofitted confined masonry, reinforced concrete block, and timber construction.
• Take ownership over the scope of work, schedule, and budget for client-driven design projects, and represent Build Change in discussions with clients and partners.
• Recruit, mentor and oversee trainers, consultants, local engineers, architects, drafters, and quantity estimators.
• Solve problems and generate solutions in the field for special cases, especially retrofits and extensions of existing buildings.
• Identify technical/research questions and coordinate materials testing and experimental work with research partners.
• Prepare regular project reports as required by Build Change or the client.
• Monitor and inspect construction projects and prepare quality control checklists; building the capacity of the Build Change construction training teams in this activity.
• Ensure that the project is implemented in an ethical, consultative, participatory manner with all participants.


Qualifications réquises

• 5+ years of professional experience in structural engineering.
• Demonstrated project management experience and skill set that includes ownership over milestones and work plans.
• Good knowledge of earthquake-resistant design and construction of confined masonry, reinforced masonry, and timber buildings.
• Hands-on construction experience in masonry, reinforced concrete, and carpentry is helpful.
• Professional Engineering license or equivalent in civil (structural) engineering and an educational background in earthquake engineering from a leading school.
• Knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office programs.
• Strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to work cooperatively in a team setting.
• Fluency in Creole and French. English language is a plus.
• An understanding of humanitarian principles and development ethics.
